Northern Soul Soulsville music, term adopted to describe African American popular music in the United States as it evolved from the 1950s to the 60s and 70s. Some view soul as merely a new term for rhythm and blues. In fact a new generation of artists profoundly reinterpreted the sounds of the rhythm-and-blues pioneers of the 1950 Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Bo Diddley, Sam Cooke, and Ray Charles whose music found popularity among whites and was transformed into what became known as rock and roll.
Harry Grundy his first soul nights were at The Golden Torch, Stoke and Blackpool Mecca in the early 70s. He started his own soul night called soulsville in 1991 and, 30 years later, it is still going strong.Harry has been involved in radio for over 15 years and through this, has met and interviewed many great artists including Billy and Jerry Butler, The Masqueraders, Millie Jackson, Lenny Wiliams, Nolan Porter, Frances Nero, Chuck Jackson and many more.In 2013 Harry was honoured to win the prestigious Sweet Soul Music Award in Porretta, Italy where he read his acceptance speech in Italian to over 3,000 people.I am currently doing a show for Salford City Radio, Recycle Radio in Hebden Bridge and Surrey Hills Soul Train Radio. I also record a show for my soul club Soulsville which is on lockdown which keeps all our regulars together. As i am now retired i love going into my soul loft and pulling out records from my 12,000 record collection to record these shows Harry says he is still as passionate atsoul music as the day he walked into the Torch all those years ago.In the past we have had kim weston, pat lewis , steve calloway from the professionals ,yvonne verne allen and the elgins ,and richie pitts of the velours Harry and Diana have visted the states on at least eight occassions meeting up with many of the artists
